Polytechnic College, Mattannur
The Mattannur Polytechnic institution began functioning as a Technical High School in 1964. Along with this, a Vocational Higher Secondary and a Pre-Vocational Center also operated from here. This polytechnic became the only institution providing technical education and training to students from the hilly regions of Kannur district.
It was established as Polytechnic College in 1994, and the VHSE (Vocational Higher Secondary Education) section relocated to the nearby Government High School in Edayannur. The campus is located on a small hill, 3 kilometers from Mattannur town, covering about 10 acres of land with a lot of greenery area consisting of various trees and rare plant species.
Sri. Damodaran Nambiar served as the first principal until 1997. Initially, there were three branches: Mechanical Engineering with 50 seats, Electronics Engineering with 50 seats, and Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering with 40 seats. The first batch had a success rate of over 80% irrespective of a lot of odd situations.
In its earlier days, the college faced many challenges, such as a lack of basic infrastructure and permanent staff. The facilities available were few classrooms. It is used for the 'applied science' and the 'electronics & instrumentation' Lab. When needed, students used to visit Kannur Polytechnic for some lab sessions due to the lack of Lab facilities at Mattannur Polytechnic. There were only a few permanent teachers and many were guest faculty members.
The administrative and academic blocks, which initially functioned from the Technical High School building, were shifted to new blocks in 2021. The first phase of the new blocks was inaugurated by the Honorable Chief Minister, Sri. Pinarayi Vijayan, on February 16, 2021, and the second phase was inaugurated by the Honorable Higher Education Minister, Smt. R. Bindu, on September 6, 2021. After much effort, the college received the approval to start the additional Electrical and Civil Engineering branches in 2021. Currently, there are approximately 700 students enrolled across five branches. The college now offers modern facilities like a robotics lab and a fab lab for training in advanced technologies.
